In the North Pacific Ocean there is so much plastic that an area of trash the size of France has formed. In some places it is so dense that it has even begun creating landmasses.
With no one paying attention to this country-sized problem we teamed up with The Plastic Oceans Foundation and LADBible to do something about it, by turning this trash patch into an official country, The Trash Isles.
On World Oceans Day we submitted an application to The United Nations to recognize The Trash Isles as an official country. Why? Because if The Trash Isles is recognised as an official country by the UN, then other countries are obliged to clean it up under The UN’s environmental charters. The Irony.
Having met all the criteria to become a country; defined borders, formed a government and set up communications, The Trash Isles started recruiting citizens, the first of which is Ex Vice President and active environmentalist Al Gore who says.....
“We want to shrink this nation [The Trash Isles]. We don't want any more plastic added. 50 billion tons over the last 60, 70 years. It’s completely outrageous.”
But he was just the tip of the trashberg. Together with LADbible and The Plastic Oceans Foundation we are aiming to get hundreds of thousands of signatures on a petition to force the UN into approving The Trash Isles application.
With the UN application pending and citizens signing up, we created everything an official country needs. We designed a flag, a currency called Debris featuring images of wildlife brutalized by floating trash. We also designed passports for prospective citizens and a set of stamps for official correspondence.
